Indignant Mendacity Belies Indigenous Minority

The executive director of the Office of Indigenous Affairs, Ignacio DLG Demapan, says the Chamorro and Carolinian people should not be forced to become a minority in their own land, but the CIA World Factbook says that they already are. The CIA World Factbook population estimate for the Northern Mariana Islands is 48,317. The population is 56.3% Asian and 36.3% Pacific Islander.

The CIA World Factbook also reveals that the Chamorros have already dropped to the third largest ethnic group in the Northern Mariana Islands. Filipinos make up 24.4% of the population, the Chinese are 23.4%, and the Chamorros are only 22.4%.

What is going on when the Office of Indigenous Affairs is saying that the indigenous people will become a minority when they already are? Are contract workers invisible to indigenous people?

No one is saying that Chamorros or Carolinians will be a minority in population. They are referring to becoming a minority in political representation, government jobs, and federal goverment benefits.

What kind of government has a minority population represented as the majority in government?

The guest workers are non-factors when it comes to Saipan's government, and they were fine with that when prior to securing temporary employment in the NMI. So what's the big deal?

Please explain.

It's a big deal. There should not be a majority of people with no rights, lead by a much smaller minority.

Anon 1:55- I would politically support a Bangladeshi if they truly represented our community. I would rather see a Korean in a government job if they were doing the job well and got the job out of their own merit. I would support federal benefits to a Martian who needed it temporarily and not rely on government cheese for life.

In my experience a lot of Chamorros don't realize how many non-Chamorros live on Saipan.

At a lot of Beautify CNMI cleanups some locals would comment that they wished more locals participated. When I pointed out that the number of Chamorro volunteers was about what you would expect based on population statistics, the local would have a "duh" moment.

Those are very old 2000 statistics from when the garment factories were in full swing. The Chinese population now would be down to about 10-15%.

On the other hand, the Filipino percentage may have increased. They are not leaving as fast as everyone else, because so many are staking their futures on the hoped-for "status change."
